The protection of God

The protection of God for his people is evident throughout Scripture. We see it with the Israelites as they moved from Egypt in captivity to the promised land, with Abraham, David, Nehemiah, Daniel, Esther, Paul, etc. In our daily lives, it’s the testimonies we carry or the testimonies of others. However many times, we are not even aware of how far and how much God has protected us.

In a heavily spiritual world, we learn that almost nothing is random. And this goes for both the things we think of as the good and the bad. As Christians, the devil’s agenda is always to fight us, to destroy what we are building, and to hinder our progress. If he can’t do it through demons, then he uses people to frustrate many things for us. And so we need God’s protection from all sorts of things. From people who we can see, but also from demons and evil spirits, which we cannot see.  

Here is an analogy. When we go to our houses at night, we have 3 door locks, an askari at the gate, 4 cameras around the house, and a security dog patrolling the property. Within our power and our means, we try to protect ourselves from physical harm. However, many times we never stop to think about the harm that we cannot see with our physical eyes. We remember that just as the angels of God can cross through the walls of our houses to guard us at night, so can demons attack us. We cannot see them, but they can see us. They study us, they know how to trap us, and they sure know where they get the legal right to attack us. All life happens in the spiritual before it happens in the physical. And so if we can call on the hand of God, the name of Jesus, and the precious blood of Jesus to protect us, then our lives will likely be a lot easier.

A little background to this, as we may know, starts with the story of the fall of Lucifer, as we read in the book of Revelation 12:1-9. When Lucifer, a former trusted angel of the Lord, fell from heaven, he fell with a third of the heavenly angels. These are the spirits and demons tormenting humanity today in all sorts of evil ways. Ephesians 6:12 tells us that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 

But there is hope, Christ, the living hope. Philippians 2:9-11 (NIV) “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”  This makes every demon, every principality, every sickness, and every evil power fall under his command, King Jesus. To know this, I believe, is the starting point of our victory in any kind of battle and any kind of war waged against our lives. However, we MUST first accept Christ as our Lord and Savior. Psalm 91:14 says he will protect those who acknowledge him as God. Think of it this way: someone you do not believe exists cannot help you—it takes FAITH.

When something fighting us can see us and somehow has access to us, yet we can’t see it and may not be fully aware of its presence and actions, our best bet becomes seeking the help of someone who can, and preferably one whose power is greater than that which fights to destroy us. No other power, but the name of Jesus.

Proverbs 30:5 tells us that God is like a shield to those who seek his protection.

Psalm 91:15: When they call to me, I will answer them; I will be with them in trouble; I will rescue them and honor them.

Psalm 121:7-8: God will protect you from all harm, watch over your life, and guard your coming and going now and forever.

Exodus 14:14 The Lord will fight for you: you need only to be still

This tells us that as much as God’s protection exists for us, we need to constantly seek him in prayer for both the things that have been revealed to us and the things that haven’t been revealed to us. Psalm 91 is one of my best assurances of God’s protection. Verse 4 says that with his faithfulness, he will protect and defend us. Verses 11-12 (NIV) say that God will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways, and they will lift you up in their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. (I wrote an earlier post on prayer and how our prayers activate the angels of God). Hebrews 1:14 says angels are ministering spirits sent to serve those who inherit salvation. And so fighting off these demons is part of this service angels have toward us, but we have to call on God first. Psalm 34:7 states, “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.” The Bible gives us many examples of when people in great danger prayed on to the Lord for protection and a breakthrough, and he sent angels to help.

My prayer for all of us (including myself) is that we will always be fully aware of God’s protection around us, as he did for Elisha. 2 Kings 6:17 And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.”

God’s protection over our lives is boundless. And even when we lose the faith that he can protect us, God remains faithful (2 Timothy 2:13). So let’s call on the name of Jesus, the precious blood of Jesus, and his righteous right hand for his protection, and he will come through for us. Always.
