Memoir of a medical intern….Day 9

Its my Country, Uganda’s independence day today, but I low key feel colonised.

I woke up feeling tired, I was woken up at 11:20pm last night by a colleague on duty to help him ease his workload. Returned to my bed at around 2am.

As I walked to ward this morning, a patient I had worked on yesterday approached me with a big smile and called me by name, Dr Violah. She was thanking me for everything I had done for her…..I had only done my job guys. But this patient appreciated. Important to note is that my immediate supervisor on obs/gyn was walking right in front of this patient at that time. So when he heard her call my name, he stood and watched the whole thing happen. He smiled and walked away. This woman made my day. Her gesture brightened up my whole mood😊

Sometimes its not about money or about physical gifts. But the simple things like words of appreciation😊.

My day was bright until I lost a patient I had started growing attached to. She had ovarian cancer. We all knew her prognosis was very poor. This morning when I saw her, my fears were that it would happen today. Had been a big change over night. May her soul rest in perfect peace.
