Nocturnal enuresis….a nightmare
#ChildhoodTales
Nocturnal enuresis commonly known as bed wetting. Its common and normal in children below five years of age but may also be seen to occur in people older than 5 years for various reasons, and most times tends to disappear on its own.
Today while recapping childhood stories with colleagues, this topic happened to pop and I seem to have been among the victims that suffered with this till way older than 5.
Waking up on a beautiful cold rainy morning was never as sweet as the sleep prior to it. Something was always wrong. The warmth in my blanket seemed to arise from something different from my blanket. Somehow the sphincters always disappointed. General happiness, peaceful sleep and the parasympathetic system. It was never a beautiful morning.
Nocturnal enuresis is something not talked about commonly, but its a big disaster to a child’s growth in terms of embarrassment and self disappointment. It affects the child’s school performance and how they relate with their colleagues. Somehow you wonder how your colleagues take tea at midnight and wakeup to a dry bed yet you take one drink a day i.e breakfast, but get to wet the bed . its very disappointing to oneself.
I literally did everything I was told to do to overcome this. I remember once being told that if I roasted a banana I had picked from the road I’d get overcome this completely. The next morning, I escaped from home, walked till I found one. Came back home, roasted it but that night must have been the night I peed the most in the history of nocturnal enuresis😂. I was beaten for peeing on bed like it was my fault😖😖. Mom decided to take it upon herself to wake me up in the night to pee, but most times she arrived when I had just finished emptying my bladder in my sleep. I sometimes wished I could wear a diaper to bed. A friend in primary school told me eating Colgate would help…….I was desperate, I ate the Colgate. More than half my education, I was in boarding school, so I actually didn’t tell my parents about how I suffered just because I knew they’d give me the mackintosh for my mattress which I hated so much……. PS; they still gave it to me. Every time I was joining a new school, I left it home intensionally.
My colleague today said their whole sub county had one old woman whose beating was thought to be the cure. This woman’s job was to walk around the village looking for children who peed on bed. He managed to escaped her many times till once when he climbed a tree to escape from her😂 . she startled him and he fell from the tree (no ruptured spleen, no fractures) but he went unconscious for about 8 hours😂😂😂. He says he didn’t pee on his bed till present day. Few people have actually shared their stories, but they are all sad.😖
I hope parents out there can support their children emotionally and together devise means to fight this. Whether its an hourly peeing alarm in the night or limiting fluids or getting creative with solutions. Support your siblings and children in this struggle. It could be the reason your child’s report card has never looked as beautiful as he/she looks
As we celebrate this MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH, please make it easier for someone struggling mentally
